POTCHEFSTROOM - The Acting North West Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, has commended police members, collaborating government departments, and law enforcement agencies for their continued success during weekly high-density operations conducted across the province from Monday, 06 April 2026, to Sunday, 12 April 2026.

These operations resulted in the arrest of 977 suspects for various crimes, in addition to 543 suspects apprehended during detective tracing operations.

The suspects were arrested for a range of offences, including drug dealing, illegal liquor trading, possession of drugs, rape, murder, attempted murder, carjacking, business robbery, residential robbery, common assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), burglary at business and residential premises, possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal ammunition, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Furthermore, 77 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested for contravening Section 49 of the Immigration Act (Act No. 13 of 2002).

Police also confiscated various items, including liquor, drugs, tobacco products, a handgun, ammunition, knives, and a vehicle. During the operations, 359 premises and 3,082 individuals were searched. In addition, nine unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down out of 163 liquor establishments inspected.

These intelligence-driven operations were executed by multidisciplinary teams comprising various law enforcement units, focusing on identified hotspots and priority areas throughout the province.

Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo stated that Operation Shanela 2 will continue to assert the authority of the state and warned that criminals will face the full might of the law.
