Media Statement WELKOM - Police are investigating a case of murder following a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Welkom. It is alleged that on Sunday, 8 March 2026 at about 09:00 Welkom police were summoned to a scene of murder in Rheederpark. On arrival at the scene police discovered an african male with three gunshot wounds. One on the head and two on the right thigh. According to information the 37-year-old victim was walking through an open field with his friends in the early hours of the morning. They were allegedly accosted by a group of men who fired shots at them fatally wounding the deceased. It alleged that the incident emanated from an altercation that erupted earlier that evening at a liquor establishment. The two groups of herdsmen allegedly had an argument over communal pastures. No arrests have been made at this stage. Investigations are underway. Police urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest(s) of the alleged suspect(s) to come forward.
