BETHLEHEM - At least 14 suspects were arrested within the Thabo Mofutsanyana District following police crime prevention operations and community tip-offs that led to the recovery of stolen items from eight policing precincts. Some of the recovered items were positively linked to cases of housebreaking and theft, including stock theft involving a dog stolen from a farm.

Between 18 and 20 May 2026, police from eight stations namely Vrede, Reitz, Harrismith, Paul Roux, Senekal, Ladybrand, Rosendal and Kestell conducted operations that resulted in these arrests. In most incidents, suspects were apprehended during stop-and-search operations after being found in possession of suspected stolen property during both daytime and night patrols. In some cases, community members and security guards, acting as the eyes and ears of the police, assisted by arresting suspects and handing them over to the police.

During the operations, police recovered electric cables, copper, clothing, corrugated iron sheets, zinc, a wheelbarrow, television set, radio, shoes and a dog stolen from a farm. All arrested suspects have since been processed and charged with possession of suspected stolen property, while others also face additional charges of housebreaking and theft.

In most incidents, it was discovered that some of the stolen items had been left unattended outside premises, while in other cases suspects gained entry by breaking windows, doors and burglar bars. Police urge community members to remain vigilant and to establish community patrol groups to assist in reducing theft-related crimes within their policing precincts.

Neighbourhood watch structures remain important, and residents are encouraged to communicate with one another and alert authorities about suspicious persons roaming the streets at any time of the day or night. Community members are also encouraged to maintain sound relationships with their local police stations and attend community meetings, crime awareness campaigns and Imbizos where police regularly engage communities on emerging crime trends affecting towns and farming areas.

Crime knows no boundaries. Let us stand together against crime.
