EASTERN CAPE - "The spate of successes in combatting crime are indeed setting our province on a high note, and are also placing our crime-fighting efforts at a far better level towards gaining public confidence" - MEC Xolile Nqatha.

On Wednesday, 12 March 2025, the MEC for Community Safety and Transport, Honorable Mr Xolile Nqatha officially released the crime statistics at the St Albans Correctional Centre in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay District. The Crime Statistics reflected are for the period from 1st July to 31 December 2024 for the Eastern Cape Province.

- Summary of crime statistics for the 2nd quarter of the financial year

Out of the 17 community reported serious crimes, there was an overall decrease by 1 866 cases (4. 5%). A total of 41 246 cases were reported during the 2nd quarter, in comparison to the 39 380 cases during the 3rd quarter.

Two out of eight districts depicted an increase in the 17 community reported serious crimes. The most contributing districts were:

Nelson Mandela Bay District with 23.4% contribution (a decrease of 7.1%)

Buffalo City Metro District with 19.9% contribution (an increase of 1.3%)

OR Tambo District with 14.2% contribution (a decrease of 2.4%)

Five problematic police stations on the 17 Community reported serious crimes are:

Mount Road
Mthatha
Humewood
Cambridge

Notable crimes (increases):
Murder - 0.2%
Attempted murder - 9.0%
Assault GBH - 3.5%
Trio Crimes - 2.4%
Carjacking - 0.8%
House robberies - 14.9%

Notable crimes (decreases):
Aggravating robberies - 3.4%
Common robberies - 2.4%
Common assault - 0.3%
Sexual Offences - 6.4%
Business robberies - 9.1%

Dutywa
East London

- Summary of crime statistics for the 3rd quarter of the financial year

Out of the 17 community reported serious crimes, there was an overall decrease by 1 996 cases (4. 5%). A total of 44 103 cases were reported during 2023/24, in comparison to 42107 cases during 2024/2025.

Five out of eight districts depicted decreases in the 17 community reported serious crimes. The most contributing districts were:

Nelson Mandela Bay District with 22. 5% contribution (a decrease of 13.5%)

Buffalo City Metro District with 19.9% contribution (an increase of 1.2%)

OR Tambo District with 14.2% contribution (an increase of 0.4%)

Five problematic police stations on the 17 Community reported serious crimes are:

Assault GBH - 0.8%
Common assault - 6.5%
Trio Crimes - 2.4%
House robberies - 5.1%

Sexual Offences - 7.0%
Business robberies - 34.2%

The acting Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla said, "These statistics are not just numbers; they represent the lived experiences of our communities and the challenges we face in ensuring safety and security for all.  The face of crime may change, but our resolve as police to combat crime will remain our top priority.

Maj Gen Dladla concluded, "As police, we are also responding to the calls of additional resources, as we recently opened the Majola Police Station in the OR Tambo District, thus making it the 200th police station in the Eastern Cape Province.

The MEC for Community Safety and Transport, Hon Nqatha during his address, he added that, "As government, we are focused on strengthening our crime-fighting strategies to effectively address criminal activities. Our efforts have already been demonstrated in the OR Tambo District, where we deployed the National Intelligence Unit and other police specialised units to tackle issues related to extortion and other serious crimes, concluded MEC Nqatha.
