Five pointed star

The five-pointed star, either in combination with the hexagon or as an entity on its own, is used in the rank insignia by the South African Police Service.

The five-pointed star serves as a symbol of guidance which guides the South African Police Service to strive towards the five broad objectives, as set out in the preamble to the South African Police Service Act 1995, (Act No 68 of 1995), namely to -

  • ensure the safety and security of all persons and property in the national territory;

  • uphold and safeguard the fundamental rights of every person as guaranteed by the Constitution;

  • ensure co-operation between the Service and the communities it serves in the combating of crime;

  • reflect respect for victims of crime and understanding of their needs; and

  • reflect the commitment of the Service towards public accountability.
