What happens to drugs that were seized by the Police?

Drugs are dealt with in the same way as any other evidence. After analysis by the forensic science laboratory and the conclusion of the case, liquor and dagga (cannabis) are destroyed at the police station under supervision of an officer. The dagga (cannabis) is destroyed by burning it and the liquor is poured out with consideration of the environmental factors and the relevant Acts. All other chemical drugs, for example heroin and Tik, must be destroyed by the forensic science laboratory under controlled conditions, irrespective of the quantity. Even one Mandrax tablet is destroyed by the forensic science laboratory. All drugs that the forensic science laboratory receives for analysis, are destroyed under controlled conditions and with the necessary authorisation.
