Media Statement from KwaZulu Natal Media Centre Madadeni High Court convicted and sentenced two murder accused to a total of 40 years imprisonment each for murder and robbery. The accused, Mandla Ngema (24) and Bongani Buthelezi (19) were convicted after the judge heard how they killed Thembani Masondo (61). For murder they were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each and 15 years each for robbery. On 24 November 2015 at about 03:00, Mondlo police attended to a complaint of murder in the Bhekumthetho area, Mondlo. On their arrival, they noticed an elderly woman who was identified as Thembani Masondo already dead in her house. She was strangled to death and her cell-phone and bank cards were taken before the accused fled the scene. A case of murder and house robbery was opened at the Mondlo police station for further investigation. Detectives from the station worked tirelessly tracing the accused and they were eventually arrested. During their arrest, the cell-phone and bank cards, belonging to the victim, were recovered. The accused allegedly attacked the victim because they received information that during the day there were people who came to pay lobola at the victim’s residence. The SAPS welcomed a heavy sentence handed down to the accused and believes that this will serve as a strong warning to those who target vulnerable women. The sentence came at the right time as women are being celebrated for the month; the SAPS emphasised that abusers of women would not be tolerated. The SAPS management team highly appreciates the good work done by their members who gather enough evidence that led to the conviction of the accused.
