WESSELSBRON - Six African males aged between 44 and 61 are expected to appear before the Wesselsbron Magistrate's Court today, 13 March 2026 on charges of stock theft and possession of suspected stolen property.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, 11 March 2026 police received information of alleged stock theft that occurred at a farm in Wesselsbron. According to the information the alleged theft was captured on CCTV after 20 sheep were stolen from the farm. A white Nissan NP200 was spotted on the footage with the vehicle registration number captured. Information was then operationalised by Odendaalsrus Stock Theft Unit, crime intelligence and Welkom Public Order Policing.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle belonged to an individual residing in Thabong. On arrival at the identified address police met with an African male who informed them of the whereabouts of his alleged vehicle. Information then led them to another house in Freedom Square. Upon searching the premises police discovered three live sheep. The male suspect could not provide documentation for being in possession of the sheep.

Further investigations led members to a house in Welkom. Upon searching the house members found two sheep carcasses.

On their way to the third identified location police spotted an African male carrying a black plastic bag and on searching the bag members found a sheep carcass. Further information led to the discovery of another sheep carcass found in a white Volkswagen minibus.

All the suspects could not provide documentation for being in possession of the sheep. The recovered sheep and carcasses were positively identified by the lawful owner.

Police confiscated three live sheep, 4 sheep carcasses, a white Nissan NP200 and Volkswagen minibus suspected to be used in the commission of the crime. The six male suspects were subsequently arrested for stock theft and possession of suspected stolen property.
