Media Statement DURBAN - On Friday, 27 February 2026, police in KwaZulu-Natal Natal arrested a 42-year-old suspect in Cornubia for extortion. It is alleged that in January 2026 the suspect called a security company owner and demanded an undisclosed amounts of money, threatening that his security guards would be killed. The security company owner did not comply with the demands and reported the matter at the Durban Central Police Station. During the same month of January, three security guards employed by the same security company were killed. The threatening phone calls to the security company owner persisted. The owner of the security company subsequently deposited the money requested by the extortionist. Members from Crime Intelligence gathered information of the suspect's whereabouts. The intelligence was relayed to the Provincial Task Team as well as the Durban Metropolitan Police Tactical Team to operationalize. The team pounced on the suspect at Curnubia where he was arrested and subsequently charged with extortion. He will appear at the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 03 March 2026. Investigations on the three murder cases involving security guards are ongoing. Ends
