11 September 2014

Nelspruit - Today 11 September 2014, the Provincial Management of the police in Mpumalanga have expressed their concern over the violent protest that is taking place at Thubelihle Township at Kriel. The protest which started on Sunday 07 September 2014, resulted in one traffic police vehicle being torched, a supermarket burnt down and a number of shops looted in this area.

Eight (8) people had since been arrested and appeared before the Kriel Magistrates' Court facing charges of public violence. All the suspects were released on warning and the case was postponed to 29 September 2014, pending further investigation.

Police management reminds the community that, though protesting is allowed as enshrined in the constitution of this country, they need not to infringe the rights of others. There are legal processes that need to be followed during protests and more so, we want to remind the community that we will not tolerate any form of violence, vandalism, xenophobic attacks and intimidation. People should be free to participate or not to participate in a protest without being intimidated.

Currently the area is calm and peaceful whilst additional police members have been deployed to monitor the situation.
