KIMBERLEY - The Macarina soccer field in Sunrise, De Aar, became a crime scene after an 18-year-old female victim was threatened at knifepoint and raped on 27 November 2020.

The accused threatened the victim, who was on her way home from an establishment, with a knife and subsequently raped.

The accused dragged her to the soccer field, undressed her, and proceeded to sexually assault her.

After the traumatic attack, the accused fled the scene, leaving the victim, who went to the nearest house and received assistance in contacting the police.

The accused was traced and arrested by the police.

On Thursday, 22 May 2025, the accused, Gavin Hendriks, aged 22, pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced in the De Aar Regional Court to eight years’ imprisonment.

Additionally, his name will be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders, and the court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe applauded Detective Constable Sivuyile Nogqala of De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for ensuring justice prevail on behalf of the victim.
