Butterworth Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 28-year-old man, Yandisa Jonas for raping a 12-year-old boy. The accused was sentenced on Thursday, 19 September 2019 to undergo 19 years imprisonment.

It is alleged that on the 27 November 2017 at about 09:35 the victim was fetching water from the tap at Eziteneni Informal Settlement near Bika Township, Butterworth. The accused came across the victim and dragged him to his shack where he raped the boy.

A case of rape was registered at Msobomvu Police Station. The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation. The accused was traced and later arrested.

Eastern Cape Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has welcomed the conviction and sentence of the accused person. She appealed to women and children irrespective of gender to break the silence whenever they are abused.
