Western Cape: A Rapid Rail Unit Sergeant arrested two train robbers while on his way to work. On Monday, 13 February 2017 at 05:10 Sergeant Marlon October of the Rapid Rail Unit, Bellville was on his way to work, travelling in a train from the Strand to Bellville. He heard a commotion on the train while travelling between Somerset West and Firgrove railway stations, and saw two men with knives robbing a woman and wanted to stab her when she resisted.
A commuter was stabbed in his left arm when he intervened by kicking the one suspect from behind in trying to stop him from stabbing the woman, as Sergeant October was approaching the robbers. Sergeant October drew his firearm and ordered the two robbers to drop their knives and lie down on the floor. He arrested the two suspects and with the help of commuters, removed them from the train at Faure Railway Station where he was further helped by a colleague with transport to the Somerset West Police Station, where he detained the suspects.
Lieutenant Colonel Veronica Abrahams, Unit Operational Commander, was proud of Sergeant October’s good work, saying that crime on the trains would not be tolerated as commuters travelled to work to go and earn a living.
