Operational successes over past weekend nets 159 suspects

KING WILLIAM’S TOWN– Several successful operations were conducted over the past weekend and it resulted in the arrest of a total of 159 suspects for various crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster.  These arrests included rape, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft out of motor vehicle, housebreaking and theft, theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods. Nine (9) persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor over the past weekend. 

A multi-disciplinary roadblock was conducted on Friday, 24 February 2017 on the R75, outside Uitenhage and a total of 174 vehicles were stopped and searched.  13 Fines were issued to the value of R6 850 during the course of the roadblock.  On Friday, 24 February 2017, members from Kwanobuhle Visible policing pounced on six illegal taverns and confiscated over 28 litres of liquor valued at about R4 550 and also fined them for contravention the Liquor Act, totalling fines issued to the value of R7 000.  285 Litres of illegal concoction were destroyed from five brewing houses.  A total of 33 traffic fines were also issued, valued at more than R16 500, during the past weekend.  The suspects were also arrested on charges relating to malicious damage to property, contravention of a protection order and 10 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs. 

The reduction of crime in the Uitenhage Cluster will remain the number one priority for the police officials in this area and they will continue with their efforts to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster.  The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.  Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime.
