Media Statement from KwaZulu Natal Media Centre Today, Empangeni Regional Court sentenced Richard Babane Shandu (50) to 20 years imprisonment each on two counts of rape. It is alleged that the mother of the victim aged 10 years asked her daughter to undergo a virginity testing which took place at Obanjeni area, Mthunzini, but she refused. The mother insisted and that is when the victim broke up and told her mother that she was raped by the accused. The victim was allegedly raped by the accused on two different occasions and was threatened to be killed should she tell anyone. A case of rape was opened on 10 June 2012 at Mthunzini SAPS. The case was then transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who took over the investigation. The accused was sentenced to a total of 40 years for two counts of rape. The KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa welcomed the sentence. “We thank the parents for their cooperation in reporting the matter to the police and not to take the law into their hands. This will send a strong message to other culprits, that you cannot escape the long arm of the Law,” he said. Media enquiries: Captain Nqobile Gwala- 079 525 8062 kzn.mediacentre@saps.gov.za
