Media Statement from Eastern Cape Media Centre KING WILLIAM’S TOWN: "We committed ourselves to uproot taxi violence and to arrest those in the taxi industry who has no regard for law and order. To date seven (7) suspects have been arrested and today a further five (5) men were taken into custody after they handed themselves over to the Police, said the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga. "It is clear that the determination as well as non- biased action by the Provincial Task Team is paying off. This was evident today when five (5) suspects who were being traced by the Task Team handed themselves over to the Police. This is an indication that the Task Team is making an impact into this investigation and the perpetrators are realizing that it is futile to try and evade arrest. More arrests are imminent and this should send out a strong message that the SAPS in the Province will not allow groups or individuals to create chaos in our communities, she concluded." The SAPS Provincial Task Team was established to investigate the violent incident at Ntlaza taxi rank on 14 March 2017 when two persons were killed and eight injured during a shootout between two taxi rival groups. The five (5) men who handed themselves over in Mthatha to Police are aged between 23 and 32 years. They are from Ngqeleni and Port St Johns. The seven (7) men arrested earlier this month in connection with the shooting incident will all appear again in the Ngqeleni Magistrates Court on the 5th of April 2017.
