EASTERN CAPE – In a compelling demonstration of unwavering dedication, an off-duty police officer recently proved that a police officer’s duty never truly ends, even outside of working hours. While out shopping, on Friday, 19 April 2024, the vigilant officer spotted a suspect wanted in a business robbery in Stirling in February 2024.

It is alleged that at about 20:30 in Berea, the officer from SAPS Cambridge task team discreetly monitored the suspect's movements while awaiting backup. Once additional officers from SAPS Mdantsane task team arrived, the suspect was swiftly apprehended. In a significant breakthrough, two firearms, thirty-nine 9mm live ammunition rounds and nine 7.65 ammunition rounds were recovered.

The 22-year-old suspect was detained on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition. Investigators are probing the suspect’s link to other cases. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, 22 April 2024.

Acting Buffalo City Metro District Commissioner, Brig Christopher Wright commended the actions of the member and added that, “This incident serves as a powerful reminder that police officers are always committed to protecting and serving their communities, regardless of the circumstances. The off-duty officer's quick thinking and proactive approach exemplifies the professionalism and commitment that police officers uphold.”
