Media Statement from Eastern Cape Media Centre Port Elizabeth: Two gang affiliates were sentenced in separate cases today, 09 May 2017, in the Port Elizabeth High Court. Pieter Petersen (36) was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for illegal possession of a firearm and 18 months for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentences are to run concurrently. The offence was committed on 18 March 2016 where Randall Mabie (34 years) was fatally wounded. Police officers heard gunshots in the area and after responding saw people running however the accused was seen running in the opposite direction. A chased ensued on foot and the accused shot at police while running. Petersen was arrested and a firearm was recovered. Andrew Myburg (19) was sentenced to 20 years for murder, 6 months for pointing of a firearm, 6 years for illegal possession of a firearm and 18 months for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently. The incident took place on 27 July 2014 in Helenvale where a 28 year old was fatally wounded. The accused and a friend were walking from Die Gaat through Chamois Street to Fitchard Street when they were accosted a group of people outside a house. An altercation broke out between the group and Monique Kiewiets (28) was shot several times. Two days after the incident, the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit arrested the accused. The sentences were welcomed by the Acting Cluster Commander of Mount Road Cluster, Brigadier Keith Meyer who emphasised that it is through thorough investigation of the cases and the integrated partnership with the prosecuting authority that we, the SAPS can enhance our strategy of achieving our goal of building a society where law abiding citizens in the Northern areas ARE and FEEL safe.
