The SAPS’s continued and persistent  efforts in eradicating the proliferation of firearms in the Mount Road policing cluster has resulted in the confiscation of four firearms including arrests this  weekend.

On Friday, 11/08  at about 23:45, Bethelsdorp members were patrolling in Ext 34 when they noticed a Maroon Toyota Tazz driving up and down the road. The vehicle was stopped and the 5 occupants were searched. Police noticed that the occupant on the front passenger’s side pushed something under the seat. On inspecting, the member found a 9mm pistol and ammunition. The 22 year old suspect was arrested.

On Saturday, 12/08 at about 22:45  while members from the Mount Road Operational Command Centre, SAPS Gelvandale and Metro police were busy with operations in Helenvale they noticed a red VW  Beetle parked in front of a house  in Stagg Street . The members stopped and searched the two occupants in the car. A 9mm was found under the passenger seat. The suspect was arrested and detained.

It is also alleged that on Saturday, at about 22:30, while Bethelsdorp crime prevention members and the Visible gang Intervention UnitCPU and VGIT members were patrolling in Timothy Valley, the community informed them of shots being fired in Angola Street. Information was followed up and the suspects were seen in the bushy area. Shots were fired by the suspects and a chase ensued. One person was apprehended with a shotgun.

On  Sunday, 13/08 at about 01:30 Walmer crime prevention members were performing  special duties when they noticed a Toyota Conquest driving in 17th Avenue Walmer. The vehicle with 5 occupants was stopped. Police noticed that the one male occupant handed a firearm to the other male person. Both males were arrested for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. The other male was found in possession of dagga. The three suspects were arrested and detained. They are expected to appear in court on Monday, 14/08.

During the stop and search operations members from the OCC also confiscated a gas gun.

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga has applauded the members that were involved in the arrests and confiscations. ‘These successes are attributed to the commitment and dedication of our members in ensuring the safety of our citizens. Our members are working tirelessly to bring criminals to book and we will ensure that, through our investigations, criminals are successfully prosecuted and sent to prison,’ added Maj Gen Siganga.
