Rustenburg: Today 22 September 2017:  Rustenburg Flying Squad foiled a possible armed robbery after a swift response following a look-out call that was received via social media from the anti-crime combatting group “SA Community Crime Watch”.

Information pertaining to the whereabouts of a White Mercedes Benz C180 was circulated and Flying Squad members responded.  Within half an hour after receiving the information, at about 11:00 the vehicle was spotted at the Ziniaville taxi rank, near Tlhabane.

The vehicle had only one occupant, namely the driver. The driver allegedly started and reversed the vehicle when he spotted the Flying Squad vehicles.

The vehicle was stopped and searched and alarmingly the following articles were found in the driver’s possession:

A revolver (serial number filed off); gloves, cable ties, knives, a Police appointment certificate and balaclava’s. The 41-year old suspect, who is from Mamelodi, was arrested for illegal possession of an unlicensed fire-arm and ammunition.

The suspect will appear in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

There is a strong possibility that the suspect and his accomplices may be linked to more resent cases that were reported in the area.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was rented from a rental company.  “We urge car rental companies or individuals to come forward and assist in the investigation”, said Maj General Adams. He also expressed his profound satisfaction and congratulated the officers on a job well done.
