Media Statement from Eastern Cape Media Centre KING WILLIAM’S TOWN: In line with our Back to Basics approach to policing over the festive season, police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster continued with their disruptive operations. Since the start of the past weekend, Friday, 10 November 2017, up to the early hours of this morning, Monday, 13 November 2017, police officials have arrested a total of 109 people for crimes ranging from attempted murder, housebreaking and theft, theft, drug and liquor related crimes and driving under the influence of alcohol. “The results of the Festive Season Operations conducted over these few days prove that the SAPS and our partners in this Cluster are committed towards combatting crime. These festive season operations will continue to make sure that all the criminals who terrorise our community are brought to book,” said the Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll. During the festive period there is an increased movement of large sums of money, like individuals receiving their bonuses and stokvel associations withdrawing large savings that will be paid out. Such financial transactions, unfortunately, also provide opportunities for intended criminals to commit crimes such as theft or robbery. The SAPS therefor appeal to the public to work with the law enforcement agencies and put safety measures in place to prevent these crimes. Stokvel associations are requested to make contact with their local police station to arrange for assistance during this period. The South African Police Service wants to encourage the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime and they appeal to the community to provide valuable information that will lead to the confiscation of illegal firearms and the arrest of suspects.
