The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused. “This will send a strong warning to the would-be criminals who think of committing the same crime and abusing vulnerable children. I further thanked the community members who came and assisted the victim but discouraged them from taking the law into their own hands,” he said.

The Empangeni Regional Court convicted and sentenced the accused (51) to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape on Monday, 5 February 2018. The accused was in love with the grandmother of the victim who denied that the accused raped her granddaughter. On 3 June 2017 the victim (6) was at Matshana area, Empangeni when she was raped by the accused in the house. While the accused was busy raping the victim, a relative unexpectedly entered the house and caught the accused on top of the victim. Community members were alerted and they came for assistance. They allegedly assaulted the accused and he managed to escape. A case of rape was opened at Empangeni police station for further investigation. Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the accused was later arrested at his workplace.
