POLOKWANE - The South African Police Service in Limpopo, together with the community of Naboomspruit, family, friends, and colleagues, gathered at the Naboomspruit Community Hall in the Waterberg District on Thursday, 22 August 2025, to honour the life and service of the late Sergeant Nyiko William Lelaka, aged forty-three. The solemn memorial service was graced by the presence of the Waterberg District Commissioner, Major General Venintia Masingi, who was accompanied by members of SAPS management and various units, union representatives from SAPU and POPCRU, justice officials led by Magistrate Strydom, traffic authorities, correctional services officials, emergency medical services, community policing forums, and other stakeholders. Sergeant Lelaka, who served with distinction as a court orderly at Naboomspruit Police Station, tragically lost his life on Thursday, 14 August 2025, when a police vehicle was involved in a devastating collision while transporting inmates to court. The accident claimed not only his life but also the lives of eight inmates who perished in the same incident, leaving the entire country in mourning. The memorial service was conducted by Chaplain Letsoalo, who delivered a moving sermon rooted in the promise that God will never leave nor forsake us, bringing comfort to the grieving congregation. The Acting Station Commander of Naboomspruit, Lieutenant Colonel Magoa, welcomed and acknowledged the distinguished guests who had come to pay their respects. Throughout the service, tributes painted the picture of a man of integrity and service. Speaker after speaker remembered Sergeant Lelaka as a man of humility and unwavering character, a police officer who never hesitated to go beyond the call of duty and a true legend within the Service. His professionalism and dedication earned him admiration both within the SAPS and among the communities he served with distinction. His immediate commander, Warrant Officer Sekhaolelo, described how Sergeant Lelaka had earned his role as lead court orderly through hard work, vigilance, and integrity—qualities that were crucial in handling inmates and working with key stakeholders. He was commended for his punctuality, passion, and unique energy during his duties. Former station commanders also shared their fond memories, speaking of his remarkable consistency and dedication throughout his career. Brigadier Mahloromela, the Provincial Head of Legal Services, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues before introducing the keynote speaker. In her keynote address, Major General Masingi spoke with deep emotion, remembering Sergeant Lelaka not only as a colleague but also as a dedicated servant of the people. She reminded mourners that he embodied far more than his rank and badge represented, describing him as a trusted colleague and above all, a faithful servant of the people of South Africa. From his early days at Roedtan Police Station to his dedicated service at Naboomspruit, he approached every assignment with determination and an unwavering sense of duty. Turning to address the family, Major General Masingi acknowledged their pain, assuring them that the entire SAPS family carried their grief as its own. She reminded them that no words could diminish the weight of their loss, but promised that they would not walk this journey alone. She concluded her address with the comforting words of Psalm 23, offering strength to the grieving family. Despite their sorrow, Sergeant Lelaka’s family expressed gratitude to the SAPS for their unwavering support and solidarity during this painful period. The service concluded with a moment of silence and a ceremonial salute, as colleagues, friends, and community members bowed their heads in honour of the life and sacrifice of a fallen hero.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has established a specialized task team to conduct a thorough and expert investigation into the incident, with the aim of bringing closure to all those affected by this devastating loss.
