Media Statement from Gauteng Media Centre Police arrested two suspects and recovered an unlicensed firearm during a shootout this afternoon between suspects and the police at East Rand Mall in Ekurhuleni. A security officer from the mall was shot and fatally wounded during the shootout, while a female victim was hit by a stray bullet and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Police were following up on information of wanted murder suspects believed to be at East Rand Mall. It is alleged that police spotted and approached the suspects with the intention of effecting an arrest. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects, ending up with one suspect shot and injured, another suspect arrested while three others evaded arrests by running away. Police recovered a firearm suspected to have been used by the suspects during the shootout. The escaped suspects are being sought, while the arrested suspects will appear at the magistrates’ court soon to face additional charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm. -Ends- Enquiries: Capt Mavela Masondo: 071 608 5490
