Port Elizabeth: Ensuring that criminals involved in gang related activities in the Northern areas are arrested and sentenced is a priority for the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit. Today, 14/05, the Port Elizabeth Regional court sentenced a member of the Spotbouer gang to an effective 15 years imprisonment for attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

On 7 May 2017, the victim (27) was walking to a shop in Harlequin Street Ext 33 in Bethelsdorp when he was approached by 5 males. One of the suspect’s fired several shots at the victim. The victim who is affiliated to the Goodfellows gang sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, back and hand.

Three days after the incident, the accused Sithembile Mofu (20) was arrested and detained. He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder; 5 years for illegal possession of a firearm and 2 years for illegal possession of ammunition. The illegal possession of ammunition will run concurrent with the illegal possession of a firearm sentence. Effectively the accused will serve a 15 year sentence in jail.

The Acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Brigadier Andrew Louw applauded the excellent efforts by the investigating officer and the prosecuting team who ensured that the accused remained in custody until sentencing.
