Media Statement from Eastern Cape Media Centre Two men appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court for possession of 50 kilograms of abalone worth R75 000 today On Wednesday, 11 July 2018, Edwin Wait (51) and Riaan Smit (49) appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of illegally poached abalone. Smit was denied bail and to remain in custody, while Wait was released on R 3 000 bail. Their case was remanded to Wednesday, 18 July this year for further investigation. The two men were arrested on Tuesday, 10 July 2018 around 12:30pm, by the Jeffreys Bay SAPS in partnership with Dark Water Ops Anti-Poaching Unit at Waterkant Street near the beach in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay. It is believed that the two suspects were arrested after the team acted on information of possible poaching of abalone at the beach. Police seized 475 abalone (50 kilograms) worth estimated R75 000.
