South African Police Service members, who are posted at Golela Port of entry near Pongola, were on duty doing their normal duties when they stopped a truck coming from Swaziland to Durban on 11 April 2013 during the day. It was stopped and the driver declared that the truck was empty. The members became suspicious and started to search it. The members were surprised to see that the truck contained contraband goods. There were 4200 boxes of Lemonvate cream, 1800 boxes of Movate cream, 54144 boxes of Caro Light cream and 61344 boxes of Caro light cream to the street value of R1 695 600. The truck was also seized and impounded at Pongola SAPS.

 

The suspect, Eric Sabela (32) was arrested and charged with possession of illegal substances and for failing to declare in terms of Customs and Excise Act. He appeared in the Pongola Magistrates' Court on 12 April 2013 where he pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted and sentenced to R5 000 fine.
