Port Elizabeth: The distribution and sale of drugs are a major contributory factor to gang violence in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth.  Correct deployment of manpower in the hotspot areas of Bethelsdorp resulted in the arrest of a gang member affiliated to the ‘Goodfellas’ gang.  According to police information, at about 13:00 this afternoon, 05 August 2018, members of the Bethelsdorp Task Team were patrolling in Ext 34 in Bethelsdorp when they saw a person jumping over the wall at a house in Gloxinia Street. Members immediately stopped and approached the person who was inside the yard. He was searched and the following amount of drugs were found in his possession:

2 packets of tik

3 mandrax tablets

3 half mandrax tablets

2 packets of cocaine.

The estimated value of the drugs is R545, 00.

The 24-year-old suspect will appear in court tomorrow, Monday, 06 August 2018 on a charge of possession of drugs.

Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile added that ‘with our Back to Basics approach towards policing we will continue to intensify our presence in these hotspot areas with the aim of uprooting and apprehending those responsible for drug peddling within the community. Drug abuse is the main cause leading to social degeneration of our youth.’
