Media Statement from Gauteng Media Centre PARKTOWN: Operation Buya Mthetho clampdown operations by the integrated forces over the weekend lead to the seizure of twenty one (21) firearms of various calibres and the arrest of over 1200 suspects were arrested for various crimes. These operations were conducted through roadblocks at identified crime hotspots. Three hundred and twenty (320) suspects were arrested in Tshwane West Cluster during raiding of eleven (11) liquor which were also closed. Hundred and thirty (130) suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes in Johannesburg Cluster were successfully traced and arrested. Other twenty (20) suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. In Soweto hundred and thirty nine (139) suspects were arrested for crimes including possession of drugs, rape, murder, drunk and driving. Other operations were conducted in Ekurhuleni North and East as well as Tshwane Central Clusters, where over seven hundred (700) suspects were arrested. Besides twenty one (21) firearms recovered, there were hundreds of ammunition of different calibres that were seized. This is a clear reflection that there are firearms somewhere in circulation possibly being utilised to commit more serious and violent crimes. Police will spend sleepless nights until those firearms are located and confiscated. The aim of these joint operations is to reclaiming the streets of Gauteng and BUYA MTHETHO operations will continue until crime is brought to its lowest levels so that the inhabitants of the Province are and feel safe at all times. The arrested suspects will appear in various Magistrate Courts soon. Police continue to hunt for the criminals and are urging the community to come forth with information that can help in the investigation or the arrest of the suspects.
