Media Statement MTHATHA - The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola is confident that police are following a positive lead, in apprehending suspects linked to the killing of six community patrollers in Tina Falls/ Godini; outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. This follows the visit of the National Commissioner to the crime scene this afternoon. The National Commissioner was fully briefed by SAPS Top Management, during the crime scene walk about, at Lugongozo Senior Secondary School at Tina falls/Godini. A team of specialised detectives from the District office of the SAPS in Mthatha, are hot on the heels of the suspects wanted in connection with the killing of six community patrollers and the attempted murder of the four who sustained injuries. The National Commissioner of SAPS General Masemola said “The investigation is ongoing and arrests are imminent in this regard; as the detective leads are pointing at ongoing Stock Theft related matters between the affected village and other neighbouring villages”. Meanwhile, investigations are at an advanced but sensitive stage in relation to the arrest of the suspects linked to the gruesome murder of 18 family members and relatives in Lusikisiki last week. A multi-disciplinary team and detectives from specialised operational environments led by the Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Lt General Sibiya and the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt General Mene has been on the ground, since last week and significant progress has been made thus far. To date the joint provincial and national teams are working around the clock to apprehend the wanted suspects and to maintain law and order in the affected areas. General Masemola also briefly addressed, the group community patrollers who were camping outside the crime scene; some of them are the survivors of the mass shooting that killed and injured other patrollers on Sunday night.
“Community participation in the fight against crime is encouraged and fully supported by the police. However acts of vigilantism remain an act of crime and strongly condemned by the police” added General Masemola.
