Women-led operations in Gauteng see police recovering 16 firearms and arresting more than 500 suspects over the long weekend

PARKTOWN - The presence of female law enforcement officers was felt in parts of Gauteng this past long weekend as women took the lead in parallel operations.

The integrated law enforcement deployment comprising of women from SAPS, Metro Police Departments, Gauteng Traffic Police, SARS, Home Affairs, and various other agencies resulted in the arrest of suspects wanted for crimes against women and children as well as other serious and violent crimes.

The operations started on Thursday night, 08 August 2019 with the tracing of wanted suspects, raiding of illegal liquor outlets, roadblocks, foot patrols as well as stop and searches. 

Over 500 suspects were arrested and 16 unlicensed firearms were recovered during the operations.

Operations in Tshwane and Ekurhuleni saw more than 320 suspects arrested for crimes ranging from rape, murder, assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm, intimidation, business robbery, fraud house breaking possession of drugs and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

In Johannesburg and West Rand, more than 200 suspects were arrested for crimes such as murder, arson, possession of unlicensed firearms, theft, rape, malicious damage to property, driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of stolen property, malicious damage to property and undocumented persons.

In Sedibeng, police pounced on suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes such as house robbery, car hijacking, rape, business robbery, murder and driving while under the influence of alcohol. Various illegal liquor outlets were closed down and liquor subsequently confiscated.

Fines issued in relation to Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences amounted to more than R100 000.

The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrate's courts from Monday, 12 August 2019.
