Media Statement POLOKWANE - Operations Vala Umgodi in Limpopo at Capricorn and Vhembe Districts led to the arrest of four suspects charged with illegal mining and bribery, in separate locations, at Westenburg and Mphephu policing areas, on Monday, 03 March 2025. After receiving information and after a thorough investigation, the police in Capricorn District were able to locate the illegal mining site near Rietvlei, Bergenek. After being discovered in possession of illicit mining equipment, two metal detector machines, a shovel, and a pick, two foreign nationals, ages 22 and 37, were arrested. They further went to the suspect’s residence to verify their identity. Police searched the house and found a suspected mineral. The suspects attempted to offer bribery to the police, evading arrest however were apprehended, and an additional charge of Bribery was added to their charges. Meanwhile, in Vhembe District, two suspects, both aged 40yrs, were arrested for illegal mining of sand and one of them with additional charge of contravention of immigration act. According to the report, suspects were found at the illegal mining sand site at Tshituni (Nzhelele) in Mphephu policing area. The Police confiscated two round shovels and one pick with a handle during the arrest. The suspects will appear before the local Magistrate's Court soon. Further police investigations are continuing.
