Media Statement CAPE TOWN - On Thursday morning, 02 April 2026, members of Mitchell’s Plain SAPS, received information about abalone at a premises in Portlands, Mitchell’s Plain. Information was operationalised and a search ensued at the premises in Oudtshoorn Steet. During the search of the premises members discovered 136 crayfish tails and 4718 shucked abalone with a total weight of 481, 79 kilogram. The estimated street value of the abalone and crayfish tails is R3 million. Six suspects, aged between 22 and 47, were arrested for the possession of abalone without a permit. They are due to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court, once they have been charged. Ends
