Media Statement from KwaZulu-Natal Media Centre Corporate Communication and Liaison South African Police Service
The Station Commander of Umlazi SAPS Brigadier Bongi Ntuli is passionate about her community and decided to visit Glebelands together with her members and Umlazi CPF Executive, to show the Glebelands community her support and desire to work closely with them. She conducted a door to door campaign, visiting all who were home during the course of the day. Brigadier Ntuli together with her team visited Glebelands hostel with an aim to sensitize the community with regards to Woman and children abuse, Domestic Violence and the Crime stop number 08600 10111, which they can use to report any crime anonymously. The community members were encouraged to use this number and to help restore peace to Glebelands by participating with the SAPS to stop crime. ‘’Being Women’s Month we need to support and protect our women by ensuring they have avenues and knowledge on how to stop or prevent abuse’’, said Brigadier Ntuli. She spoke with some community members at their home, face to face, addressing their personal concerns and encouraging them to work with the police in order to reduce the crime at the hostel. “Umlazi police are here to assist and to eradicate crime at the hostel. I feel it is important to come to your doors and to let you know that we care. Together we can make a difference but alone we cannot do as much as we can together. I appeal to you as part of the community to help us restore peace and stability at Glebelands,” she said. The community was happy to see the station commander visiting Glebelands hostel, which they described as a “light of hope” to decrease crime. SAPS believes strongly in community policing and to interact with the man on the street. The conscience effort to go from door to door, shows the dedication to the community and their wellbeing. The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the Umlazi Station Commander and her members for having a visit at the Glebelands. This shows that the police are committed to stabilise peace at the Glebelands hostel. “We also hope that this visit will yield good results as the people are now aware of the crime stop number they can use to report any form of crime with no fear of being known,” he said.
