NORTHERN CAPE - The SAPS in the Northern Cape welcomes the rape sentence that was handed down to 27-year-old man in the Postmasburg Magistrates’ Court. On 13 January 2020, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 6-year-old girl in Postmasburg.

On 25 December 2018 at about 01:00, the accused snatched the girl from her shanty, where she was sleeping with other siblings. The uncle of the victim, who was visiting the family for the Festive Season took her to a veld, where he threatened and raped her. The parents of the girl woke up and realised the girl was missing and started searching for her and the uncle. The victim was found not far from the house and she assisted in pointing out where the accused was hiding. The accused was immediately arrested and stayed in custody up until his sentencing.

“The Provincial Head in the Northern Cape for Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), Brigadier Nicky Mills lauded the investigating officer, D/Sgt Lionel Rooiland, attached to Postmasburg FCS unit for a job well done. Thank you for making sure that the perpetrators committing these heinous crimes are punished with the full might of the law, said Mills”.
