POLOKWANE - The South African Police Service (SAPS) prepares to bid farewell to one of its most distinguished officers, as Major General Christina Hlagodi Morakaladi, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services in Limpopo Province, concludes her remarkable 39-year career on 31 May 2025. Known affectionately throughout the SAPS family as "The Nurturer”, Major General Morakaladi's journey from a young Constable in 1986 to one of the highest-ranking female officers in the province stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication, exceptional administrative acumen, and compassionate leadership. Major General Morakaladi joined the SAPS in 1986, completing her basic training in Hammanskraal before being deployed to Mankweng Police Station. Her exceptional capabilities were quickly recognized, leading to her selection for Crime Intelligence operations—a prestigious achievement for a female officer at that time. Her career path took her through various critical administrative positions, from the Lebowa Headquarters in Seshego to Lebowakgomo Head Office, where her organizational talents flourished. At Nebo Police Station in Sekhukhune District, she distinguished herself in Client Service Center operations, establishing the foundation for her people-centered approach to policing. In 1993, Major General Morakaladi made history as one of the first officers seconded to National Head Office as part of a ground breaking recruitment initiative, serving at the rank of Warrant Officer. Upon her return, she played a pivotal role as a facilitator at Provincial Human Resource Development, where she began transforming SAPS training methodologies. Her profound impact on recruitment processes across Limpopo Province began in 2001, when as a Captain, she assumed responsibility for provincial recruitment standards and practices. She revolutionised this critical function, implementing systems that ensured fairness, transparency and excellence in the selection of new officers. One of Major General Morakaladi's most significant contributions has been her steadfast commitment to integrating wellness and cultural engagement into police operations. As Chairperson, overseeing cultural activities including POLMUSCA, Poitjiekos, and Sports, she crafted innovative team-building initiatives that strengthened the fabric of the SAPS community. Her visionary leadership activated the Employee Health and Wellness Component as a cornerstone of SAPS operational effectiveness, recognizing that officers dealing with traumatic situations required comprehensive psychological support. Under her guidance, the service became central to maintaining officer well-being and operational readiness. Major General Morakaladi's exceptional contributions were recognized with a series of rapid promotions—from Superintendent in 2004 to Senior Superintendent just two years later. In 2016, she achieved a historic milestone when appointed Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, a position she has held with distinction for nearly a decade. In this capacity, her responsibilities expanded to encompass province-wide strategic planning, resource allocation, and institutional development. She personally oversaw the implementation of critical support functions including: Comprehensive human resource management and development, financial governance and procurement oversight, supply chain management and logistics, facilities management across all SAPS installations in Limpopo, among others. Major General Morakaladi will be remembered for her profound empathy. She transformed her office into a sanctuary where officers could find support during personal and professional challenges. Her leadership in ensuring dignified funeral services for fallen officers and comprehensive support for their families has set a national standard for care within SAPS. Her innovative approach to the integration of reservists and volunteers has been adopted at the national level, creating new pathways for community members to contribute to public safety while expanding SAPS human resource capacity. Major General Morakaladi complemented her practical experience with rigorous academic achievement, earning: National Diploma in Police Administration from Unisa, B-Tech Degree in Policing from Unisa, Certificate in Human Resources from Unisa and Advanced Certificates in leadership, personnel investigation, and disciplinary regulations. As she approaches retirement, the proud mother of two reflects on her years orchestrating retirement ceremonies for colleagues, including Provincial Commissioners, ensuring dignified farewells for those who served alongside her. With characteristic humility, Major General Morakaladi attributes her successes and resilience through challenges to the support of her family, colleagues, and her faith. Her commitment to continuous professional development serves as a powerful example to younger officers, particularly women aspiring to leadership roles within SAPS. "Major General Morakaladi represents the very best of the South African Police Service," says Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo Provincial Commissioner. "Her influence extends far beyond administrative excellence—she has been the heartbeat of our organization, ensuring that while we focus on crime prevention, we never lose sight of the human dimension of policing."
