East London TRT members who were from Mthatha to East London on Thursday, 06 February 2020 arrested four men for armed robbery along Mthentu cuttings near Bumbane junction, Mthatha.

The police caught the suspects robbing the truck driver and his passenger of an undisclosed large amount of cash.

A shootout ensued between the suspects and the police. One of the suspects was shot on his stomach and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care and under police guard.

A firearm was recovered from one of the suspects with live rounds of ammunition. On further investigation it was discovered that three suspects aged between 27, 30, 34 were all traffic officers employed at Mnquma Local Municipality at Butterworth. A fourth suspect who is aged 32 is alleged to be self-employed at Butterworth.

The money was not recovered. Once charged, the suspects will appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 10 February 2020 on charges of armed robbery. The case is investigated by organised crime unit.
