Police Officer shot dead while committing a robbery at Umzinto area

During the robbery it is alleged that there was a shootout between the suspects and the victim yesterday, 04 July 2014. One suspect, who was later identified as a police officer from Umlazi Tactical Response Team, was shot and killed while the second suspect was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard. The victim was also wounded during the shooting. Three other suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in their two getaway vehicles which were a Toyota Corolla and an Isuzu bakkie.

Umzinto police opened a case of business robbery, inquest and attempted murder for further investigation. A 9mm pistol belonging to the deceased was found at the scene. It will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was in used in any other crimes in the province.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her concerned about the involvement of certain police officers in criminal activities. "We will work hard to get rid of corrupt police officers from the services. Our loyal members will work around the clock to trace those suspects who fled the scene with stolen cash," she said.
