Police in the Western Cape recover several firearms and ammunition, suspects arrested

CAPE TOWN - Vigilant members attached to Nyanga SAPS arrested a 17-year-old male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

On 17 December 2024 at 01:25, the members were patrolling Browns Farm area when they were stopped by a member of the public who reported to them that a male has just pointed him with a firearm. The members got the description of the male and found him at Block 22 at the Nyanga Hostels. They searched him upon which they found a revolver with serial number removed with five rounds of ammunition in his possession.

In an unrelated matter, on Tuesday morning, 17 December 2024, at about 10:00, Grassy Park SAPS members were busy with crime prevention patrols when they observed a male on a bicycle in Strandfontein Road, Lotusriver cocking a firearm. The members drove straight to suspect and found the firearm hidden in front of his tracksuit pants. A pistol with serial number removed and one round was confiscated. The 18-year-old male was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Elsies River police members arrested a 43-year-old man for the possession of an imitation firearm, half of a mandrax tablet and a .22 round of ammunition, whilst doing visible policing patrols and stop and search operations in White House Way, Epping Forest. The members stopped a suspicious looking male in the road, and searched him, during which they found the mentioned items in his possession

Western Cape provincial commissioner Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile commended the members involved for the recoveries, claiming that this is the right path towards a safer festive season.

Once charged, the suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Goodwood Magistrates’ courts on mentioned charges
