Five suspects escaped from lawful custody on 2 September 2014 at about 20:45 at the Qumbu police cells in Eastern Cape.

The suspects were returning from a visit to the clinic when they managed to overpower a police officer and took possession of his state firearm. A scuffle ensued and one police member was shot and wounded in the upper body. He was later admitted in the Mthatha hospital and is in a stable condition.

One of the suspects, Thabo Kwela (29) was shot and killed in the process. Athi Fuan (19) who escaped was re-arrested. He appeared at Qumbu Magistrate's Court on 4 August 2014 on charges of hijacking and escape from lawful custody.

All the suspects were detained in Qumbu and were linked to various cases of serious and violent crimes committed in around Lusikisiki, Bizana, Flagstaff, Mthatha and Idutywa.

The three wanted suspects are:

Sinethemba Mseleni - 33 years old

Wellington Cele - 31 years old

Thembekile Mthalane - 44 years old.
