Media Statement GAUTENG – A 60-year-old man is expected to appear in the Booysens Magistrates’ Court today on charges of contravention of the firearms and ammunition control Act. It is alleged that in August last year, Booysens police attended to a house robbery scene at the suspect’s house in Robertsham. While conducting the investigation, police recovered about 255 different calibre of firearms and ammunition in the premises. Further investigation revealed that the firearms were allegedly removed from a Fordsburg gun shop which was put on curatorship. The matter was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Johannesburg looking into firearms and explosives investigation. A summons for the suspect to appear in court was issued and executed on Friday, 19 November. Meanwhile, in the past seven months, the Hawks together with the Standard Bank’s Risk and Operations unit in Gauteng, seized about 51 different calibre of firearms and ammunition at some of the Standard Bank branches in Gauteng, including Springs, East Gate shopping centre, Bedford Centre, Fordsburg, Braamfontein, Carleton Centre, and Pretoria Central. This is an on-going investigation into the long outstanding payments for the bank’s safety security deposit boxes were firearms were kept for safeguarding. The investigation team has registered an enquiry for investigation regarding who the rightful owners of the seized firearms are. Ends
