KWAZULU-NATAL – Two suspects aged 30 and 31 were arrested shortly after their appearance at Balfour Magistrates’ Court yesterday on a similar offence of theft and damage to essential infrastructure.

The duo was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team members from Pietermaritzburg for theft of copper valued at R250 000.00 which happened in February last year. It is alleged that the two accused together with their accomplices allegedly stole 67 metres of contact and catenary wire at Balgowan railway line near Emahenyeni.

A case of damage to infrastructure was reported at Nottingham Road police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks in Pietermaritzburg for further investigation.

Initial investigation revealed that five suspects were allegedly involved in the copper theft. The first two suspects were arrested last month at Nottingham informal settlement and the motor vehicle used in the commission of crime was also seized then.

The duo will appear in the Howick Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 5 February 2021.
