Pretoria:  The Management of the South African Police Service has welcomed the report that a suspect who is allegedly responsible for the killing of Sergeant Moshela Mokgobo last night in Alexander has this afternoon, handed himself over to the police at Johannesburg Police Station.

Sergeant Mokgobo was on duty when he was killed yesterday, just before 19:00, in Alexander.  It was reported that the Sergeant and colleagues were following a suspicious vehicle when the vehicle in question got stuck in traffic on 3rd Street near Pan African Mall. Sergeant Mokgobo and a colleague approached the said vehicle on foot when shots were fired at them by the occupant. The Sergeant was shot and he immediately succumbed to his injuries.

The province immediately initiated the 72-Hour Activation plan which entailed the mobilization of all the necessary resources needed to investigate the incident.

The 52-year-old suspect sensed the net was closing in on him forcing him to hand himself over to police. He will appear in court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.

The SAPS welcomes any information on crime which may be communicated anonymously to the SAPS Crime Stop number 086 00 10111 or via MySAPS App.
