DURBAN - Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a 38-year-old man for three counts of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery on Wednesday, 30 July 2025 at Nhlabankosi in Umthwalume.

On 27 June 2024, Sandile Mkhize (45), Xoliswa Mbhele (33) and Ndunduzo Duma (34) were ambushed by unknown suspects whilst driving along R102 Road at Umthwalume. Mkhize was coming from court when he was fatally wounded, together with two people who were travelling with him. One person who was at a nearby bus stop sustained injuries from a stray bullet and was conveyed to hospital for medical attention.

Hibberdene detectives worked tirelessly investigating the matter and to ensure that the suspects were brought to book. Their hard work paid off when they received information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.  

The detectives from the Provincial Murder and Robbery Task Team, Ugu Tactical Response Team, eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team, Provincial Task Team PES, Metro Trio Task Team and Tracing Team proceeded to Nhlabankosi where a suspect was nabbed. He was also successfully linked to cases of stock theft, theft of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

The suspect is due to appear before Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 1 August 2025.
