Potchefstroom: The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo welcomed the sentencing of the accused in the case of Mosimaneotsile David Chika to life imprisonment by the North Gauteng High Court sitting in Stilfontein on Thursday, 26 November 2014.

David Chika who was the Regional Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) at Dr Kenneth Kaunda District was shot and killed at his house in Alabama, Klerksdorp on 14 December 2012. The conviction followed the marathon trial that began on Thursday, 6 October 2014 until Wednesday, 26 November 2014. Out of the six accused, four of them; Jeffrey Letuka, William Malefo, Happy Kadi and Sehlangu Sikhakhane were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and eight years imprisonment for conspiracy to murder.

Papiekie  Babuile was sentenced to eight  years for conspiracy to commit murder and 12 years imprisonment for murder, while Joseph Molebatsi got eight years for conspiracy to commit murder and 15 years imprisonment for murder. The court acquitted Sehlangu Sikhakhane on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

“We would like to commend the entire criminal justice system team members that were involved in the case for ensuring that the accused get hefty sentences. This will definitely send a clear message that crime does not pay and that the police will not hesitate to deal with any person who transgresses the law”, said Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo.
