LIMPOPO – A 52-year-old former police official was on Thursday, 04 November 2021 served with summons to appear in court for alleged corruption.

The suspect who was a Warrant Officer attached to the Westernburg detectives of the South African Police Service (SAPS), was investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against four accused persons in 2015. It is alleged that the former cop promised to release the four accused on R500-00 bail each and the amount of R2000-00 was subsequently paid to him.

The charges against the four accused persons were later withdrawn by the court and they began to claim their bail money. They were surprised to learn that the investigating officer released them on warning, therefore no money for bail was required.

The matter was reported to the Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation and the investigation was instituted against the suspect until he was served with summons to appear in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes court on 30 November 2021.

The very same suspect was convicted on 22 September 2021 for another similar but unrelated case of corruption and he is currently on bail while awaiting sentencing on 12 November 2021.
