Today, the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni and MEC for Social Development, Honourable Weziwe Thusi, accompanied by the ANC Women’s League visited  the family of late Constable Sibiya who was gunned down at KwaMsane area over the weekend. Three suspects who were linked to the killing appeared in the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 6 January 2015 and they were remanded until 12 January 2015 for further investigation.

On 3 January 2015 at approximately 9:00, KwaMsane police officers were on duty patrolling around Mfekaye area when they attended to an accident in the area. The driver of the vehicle involved in an accident reported that he was knocked by another vehicle which fled the scene after accident.  Description of the said vehicle was given to the police and the members started to look for it. The members spotted the said vehicle and they chased it. It is alleged that the occupants opened fire towards the members and Constable Thathokuhle Nokukhanya Sibiya (30) was shot and killed. The suspects left their vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes and disappeared.

The vehicle which was used by the suspects was circulated and came as a hijacked vehicle at Esikhawini area this month. Few hours later as the members were still tracing the suspects, they received information about their whereabouts and three suspects were eventually arrested. Two unlicensed 9mm pistols with 21 live rounds of ammunition were recovered. The arrested suspects aged 29 and 35 have been charged for murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of vehicle suspected to be stolen. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni strongly condemned such brutal killing and describe it as barbaric.  Her sudden passing has left us in shock and we pray for strength to the Sibiya family during this difficult period.  He was one of our dedicated member who served the SAPS with excellence’ she said.
