Police murder suspect to appear in court

EASTERN CAPE – Khuselo Mkhangeli appeared briefly at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday for charges of murder and robbery of a police officer on 18 June 2021 near Mthatha.

Sergeant Mphakameli Mazinywana (49) who was attached to Mthatha central detectives was shot and killed at his old Payne house by unknown assailants before they made off with his service pistol. An operation was conducted around Motherwell township on 10 July 2021, following information received about the case.

Two pistols including what is believed to be the murder weapon were seized. Ayanda Tutu and Siyanda Sonamzi were consequently arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.

Further investigation linked Mkhangeli to the case. He was traced and arrested on 18 January 2022, after it was established that he was arrested for another robbery case in Thabazimbi area, Limpopo.

Mkhangeli appeared in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Monday, 24 January 2022. The case was remanded to Thursday, 27 January 2022, for a bail application. He is expected to appear along two other suspects who were previously arrested.

More arrest is imminent as one of the suspects remain at large as investigation continue.
