Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Lindela Lofani (44), Hlalanathi Lofani (46), Mzimasi Lofani (41) and Bongani Kenny Mgqatse (51) appeared in the George Magistrates’ court today facing charges of dealing in illicit drugs as well contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) 121 of 1998. This follows a multidisciplinary operation executed yesterday by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime team from George and Ggeberha, George K9 unit, POPS Southern Cape as well as Oudtshoorn and Motherwell Crime Intelligence. The operation resulted in numerous properties being searched and the arrest of four suspects. This comes after an extensive investigation by the team targeting a suspected organised crime group alleged to have been involved in securing cannabis from several cultivators based in the rural villages of the Eastern Cape. Once the required quantity of cannabis was secured it would be moved to the Southern Cape. The team moved and swooped in on the suspects in the early hours of yesterday morning, 31 January 2022 after a warrant of arrest was obtained. The four briefly appeared today, in the George Magistrate’s Court and their case was remanded for Friday, 04 February 2022. A fifth suspect, a 32-year-old was also traced and arrested by the George Hawks’ team. He will make his first appearance tomorrow, for him to be added to the four. All five accused will then appear together on Friday, in the George Magistrates’ Court for bail application. Ends
