GQEBERHA - SAPS Gelvandale, in collaboration with other SAPS teams, the Municipal Police, the SANDF, and the Department of Immigration, achieved notable successes during coordinated operations conducted under Operation Identity on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, between 09:00 and 16:00. The operation focused primarily on the Korsten business area in Gqeberha.

The operation comprised several strategic interventions, including compliance inspections of second-hand goods dealers to identify and recover suspected stolen property, such as televisions, laptops, and cellular phones; the execution of search warrants at identified drug outlets targeting the seizure of illegal firearms and narcotics; enforcement of municipal by-laws and traffic regulations, including the issuing of fines for non-compliance; roadblocks aimed at detecting possession of stolen property, illegal firearms, and drugs; the arrest of undocumented individuals; and crime prevention activities, including stop-and-search operations of vehicles and pedestrians.

These coordinated efforts resulted in the arrest of two suspects for the illegal possession of drugs, as well as 26 undocumented individuals. Law enforcement officials issued fines amounting to R12 000-00 for municipal by-law infringements and R13 000-00 for traffic violations.

In addition, authorities confiscated various narcotics, including 23 packets of CAT, 24 packets of crack cocaine, 29 packets of tik, and 30 mandrax tablets. Counterfeit goods, including clothing, medicines, and hair products, with an estimated value of approximately R900 000-00, were also seized.

As part of efforts to enhance visibility and community safety, officers conducted high-visibility patrols and visits to key locations such as ATMs, banks, taxi ranks, shopping centres, schools, and identified crime hotspots.

The Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, commended the members involved for their coordinated efforts. He emphasised the importance of such operations in disrupting criminal networks and restoring public confidence.

“The success of today’s operation demonstrates our commitment to proactive policing and ensuring that those who engage in criminal activities are brought to justice. We will continue to intensify these operations to safeguard our communities and maintain law and order,” said Brigadier Ngalo.

The South African Police Service remains committed to strengthening operations under Operation Identity to combat crime, enforce the law, and ensure the safety and security of all communities.
